ABSTRACT
Inawell-knownfieldinSouthernEurope,thetop-holesections,characterizedbyhighlyfractured
carbonateformation,theoperatorsuccessfullyandsafelydrilledtwowellswithanengineered
viscoelasticwater-baseddrillingfluidthathighlycontributedtominimizeformationlossesand
reduceenvironmentalimpactacrossthesurfaceaquifer.Operatorshistoricallydrilledtheshallow
carbonatesectionswithgelpolymersystemsandconventionalremedialtreatmentswithout
acceptableresultsinsolvingthistroublesomeproblemwithanegativeimpactonnon-productive
time(NPT)andoverallprojectcost.Theuseofaselectedviscoelasticwater-baseddrillingfluid
system,withathixotropicbehaviour,andappropriatelostcirculationproceduresdrastically
reduceddownholelossratesandimprovedoveralldrillingperformance.Laboratorytesting
conductedduringtheplanningandexecutionphasesoftheprojecthelpedevaluateproducts
compatibilityandverifytheeffectivenessoftheselectedLCMinsealingtheexpectedfractures.
