Theriseofartificialintelligence

Artificialintelligence(AI)hastakentheworldbystormandsetoffagoldrushacrosstheeconomy,

withanunprecedentedpaceofadoptionandinvestmentinthetechnology.Thisyear’sspecial

chapterdiscussestheimpactofAIonthefinancialsectorandtherealeconomyandlaysoutthe

implicationsforcentralbanks.

ThetechnologybehindAIcanbetracedbacktotheearlydaysofcomputingitself.Butitwasthe

adventofdeeplearninginthe2010s,basedonthecombinationofmassiveamountsofdataand

computingpower,thatsetthestagefortoday’sAIapplications.Today’smachinelearningmodels

excelatimposingmathematicalstructureonunstructureddata,toidentifypatternsofinterestin

vastamountsofdata.(Graph1).

Oneoftheleadingmachinelearningmethodsisthe“embedding”ofwordsinavectorspaceso

thatwordsbecomearraysofnumbers(Graph2).Thevectorspreservemeaning,inthatsimilar

wordsareclosertogetherinthevectorspace.Forexample,theword“turtle”iscloseto“hawk”

and“alligator”,butfarfromwordsforsportsorfortheweather.
