Unit 7 Visiting Scenic Spots Part 1 Situational Dialogues 1. A tour group is on the way to the Forbidden City. The following dialogue is between the tourists and their local guide. Lily: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. This is the first morning after you’ve been in China. Today we are going to visit the Forbidden City, which is in the center of Beijing. We’re now at the outskirts of Beijing. It will take us 50 minutes’ drive to get there. Tourist: Sorry to bother you. But what was the Forbidden City used for? Lily: Good question. You know, in feudal China, the emperors used to live in palaces. The Forbidden City was this kind of palace for the emperors to live in during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. This palace is large. It consists of about 9,000 rooms altogether. Tourist: Oh, it’s marvelous! How did the ancient Chinese build so many rooms? And how can we see all the rooms in a single day? Lily: Don’t worry. You don’t have to see all the rooms. Upon entering the Forbidden City, please walk straight ahead along the central axis. You will see the most essential buildings—the three main halls in the front part and the three main palaces in the back part. Tourist: Could you explain to us the functions of these halls or palaces? Lily: The halls in the front part were used for handling state affairs. And the palaces in the back part were the residence for the emperor and his family. The first and most important hall is called the Hall of Supreme Harmony. Grand ceremonies were held there, such as the emperor’s enthronement ceremony and the wedding ceremony. Tourist: I can’t wait to see it. 2. A tourist has arrived at the Summer Palace. The following dialogue is between the tourist and his interpreter. Interpreter: Nice to meet you, Mr. White. I’m glad to be your interpreter. Tourist: Nice to meet you. Today I will follow you to visit the Summer Palace. Interpreter: Please rest assured.
