He is regarded as one of the most outstanding English writers and poets during his lifetime. A century has passed, since Hardys Jude the Obscure was first published in 1895. As the last novel of Hardy, it still causes disputes. Some critics, such as William R﹒Rutland, and Lord David Cecil, regard the book a relative failure because of its violation of probability, its morbidity, or its philosophical pretentiousness. Other critics, such as Lance St﹒John Butler, Arthur Macdowall, and Albert Guerard, acclaim the book as possibly Hardys best, his?Swan Song, and the first modern novel. Virginia Woolf had ever praised Hardy as one of the greatest pessimistic writers of their time. Meanwhile, Hardy is a writer with leading ideas?.He had put forward many problems of family in times to come,like cohabitation and children from broken family. To certain extent,Hardy is also a social scholar. Jude the Obscure is the last and one of Hardy’s greatest novels. With the publication of this work,his novelist art approaches its greatest height. In the novel,Hardy presented the tension of being caught between two historical worlds and his ambivalence about the dilemmas of the time he lived in. Hardy clearly satirized deceptive characters of religion and daringly described the unhappy and contemptible marriage and fully exhibited disadvantageous convention. Jude the Obscure mainly manifests the hard living and spiritual pursuit of lower class people.The whole paper contains five parts. The first part is introduction to Hardy and his Jude the Obscure; the next part analyzes Jude’s tragic character and his conflict with Arabella, Sue and the environment he lived in.
