Daniel Defoe Born: 1659–1661 Died: 24 April 1731 Occupation: Writer, Journalist,Merchant Genres: Adventure Robinson Crusoe. Daniel Defoe, born Daniel Foe, gained his fame for his novel Robinson Crusoe. A prolific and versatile writer, he wrote more than 500 books, pamphlets and journals on various topics (including politics, crime, religion, marriage, psychology and the supernatural). He was also a pioneer of economic journalism. Early Life as A Merchant His father,James Foe wanted him to enter in ministry, but Daniel Defoe had great ambitions and preferred to be a businessman……(1) Then in 1692 (32years old),he was arrested because of debts trouble. Following his release, he travelled in Europe and Scotland and it may have been at this time that he traded wine In 1696(36years old), he operated a tile and brick factory in what is now Tilbury, Essex. Satirical poem: The True-Born Englishman (《真正的英国人》),defended the king against the perceived xenophobia of his enemies, satirising the English claim to racial purity. A pamphletThe Shortest-Way with the Dissenters; Or, Proposals for the Establishment of the Church (《消灭不同教派的捷径》). Daniel Defoe in the pillory 笛福公开发表批评言论 Marriage and Family In 1684, Defoe married Mary Tuffley.With his debts and political trouble, their marriage was most likely a difficult one. But it lasted fifty years, however, and together they had eight children, six of whom survived. In the last years of his life, he was very old,poor ,lonely and never out of debts. None of his chiIdren took care of him. Daniel Defoe died on 24 April 1731, probably while in hiding from his creditors.
