 FLOWER BUD DIFFERENTIATION PATTERNS OF THREE LILY CULTIVARS# 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 ZHANG Yingjie, CHEN Xiaofang, WU Shasha, LIU Xiaohua, CHEN Lina, WU Jindi, JIAO Xuehui, LI Ranxin, WANG Shuang, LU Yingmin** (College of Landscape Architecture, Beijing Forestry University, Beijing, China, 100083) Abstract: To study the flower bud differentiation process of lilies, Asiatic hybrids ‘Pollyanna’, ‘Prato’ and Oriental hybrid ‘Siberia’ were observed under microscope. The study indicates that ‘Pollyanna’ and ‘Siberia’ have the same pattern in the course of flower bud differentiation. They translated from vegetative growth to reproductive growth neither after harvest, nor during the cold storage period, but only happened after being planted. ‘Prato’ started bud differentiation when they were harvest, and had further changes during the cold treatment. And the bud differentiation was finished after planting. Moreover, the study indicates that except the growing point, starch contents in different parts of lily bulbs descended during the cold treatment, and increased after the low appeared. Starch contents in outer scales and inner scales had the same trend with the starch content in inner scales changed more remarkably. On the other hand, changes of sucrose contents in these parts had the opposite trend compared with the changes of starch contents. Key words: Flower bud differentiation; lily cultivars; type; carbohydrate 0 Introduction Lilium Oriental hybrids and other L. hybrids need a low temperature period to flower, while some Asiatic hybrids start flower bud differentiation since bulbs are harvest (Mu et al. 2005). Carbohydrate is an important reserve providing energy, whose forms and contents affect the growth and development of plants (Christophe et al. 1996). Starch is a major carbohydrate stored in lily bulbs, providing energy and nutrition for the early growth of stem axis.
