He was deeply influenced by the French existentialists’ writing technique. Therefore, most of his works are pervaded with thick free postmodernist color. The French Lieutenant’s Woman, his masterpiece, claimed his firm position in postwar English literal field. Approaches to this novel vary greatly in the literary field. This thesis innovatively sees into the novel by regarding Charles as the central figure, and mainly focuses on the analysis of the three characters’ inner relationship from perspectives of experience, personality and consistency of their action, especially the deep analysis from the psychoanalytic aspect. The thesis falls into three parts, including introduction, body and conclusion. The first part briefly introduces the background information of John Fowles and The French Lieutenant’s Woman. The second part contains three chapters. The author firstly provides the background information and a literary review of the author and his works; and then analyzes the three protagonists and their deep-rooted relationships adopting Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic theory.
