Pride and Prejudice The author of Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen whose novels were witty, warm and ironic .though due to the status of women authors at the time, most of her novels were published anonymously. Austen was one of eight children of an English clergyman, and given the accomplishments of her novels she lived a remarkably quiet and domestic life in the rural south of England. Pride and Prejudice is a novel, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th-century England. . Though the storys setting is characteristically turn-of-the-19th-century, it retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of most loved books such as The Big Read. It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature, and receives considerable attention from literary scholars. Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austens memorable characters or themes. To date, the book has sold some 20 million copies worldwide. Miss Austen never attempts to describe a scene or a class of society with which she was not herself thoroughly acquainted. The conversations of ladies with ladies, or of ladies and gentlemen together, are given, but no instance occurs of a scene in which men only are present.
