As an offshore location it first was discovered by Texas Instruments, which has been running a subsidiary in Bangalore starting from 1985. The exceptional annual growth of software exports of average 40% during the 1990s has promoted India to one of the top software exporters. According to NASSCOM (India’s National Association of Software and Service Companies) software and service exports in India have reached a value of $12 billion in 2004-05, 34% higher than $9.2 billion in 2003-04. India has become a favourite place for North American companies to start their OSD projects. In 1992 a Motorola’s subsidiary in Bangalore has achieved the highest quality rating becoming the second one to get Capability Maturity Model Level 5 (the other one in the world was IBM) [14]. By now 265 companies of the Fortune 500 have established joint ventures, fully owned subsidiaries or signed on-site body-shopping contracts with Indian firms.
