摘要 1965年，卡特福德在其著作 《翻译的语言学理论》中首次提出了“翻译转换” 的概念。虽然该理论引入中国已有很长时间，但一直没有引起国内翻译学界足够的重 视。本文以China Counting一书中具体的翻译实例为基础，从“层次转换” 和 “范 畴转换”两个层面上探讨了“翻译转换”理论在翻译实践中的应用。但是，卡特福德 的理论研究仅局限于语言结构本身，而未考虑到非语言层面的因素(比如读者、语篇、 文化因素等)对翻译实践的影响，所以笔者认为在应用“翻译转换”理论的同时，有 必要借鉴我国翻译学者黄忠廉提出的“变译”理论中的某些翻译方法，指导该书翻译 过程中宏观层面上的处理策略。此外，为使翻译实践中具体的“变译”操作有章可循， 减少主观随意性，本文还总结了一些译者必须明确的“变译”原则 （比如读者的特殊 需求，文化传递等）。笔者希望，以上研究能实现“翻译转换”理论与“变译”方法 的有效结合，使根据以上理论和原则翻译的China Counting一书能更好地满足中国读 者的需求，同时为其他译者提供帮助。 关键词：翻译转换 实用性与局限性 变译 变译方法 ii ABSTRACT Catford put forward the notion of “Translation Shift” in his A Linguistic Theory of Translation in 1965. Although the theory has been introduced into China for a long time, it has been neglected in China. This paper, by analyzing the examples in the Chinese translation of China Counting, explores the application of “Translation Shift” from two perspectives—“level shift” and “shift of category”. However, Catford, who confines his theoretical research on the level of linguistic structures, fails to recognize the influence o f non-linguistic factors (such as readership, discourse and culture) on translation practice. Therefore, the author suggests that it is necessary for translators to apply Huang Zhonglian‟s “Theory of Translation Variation” in order to provide solid help for the translation of China Counting. Furthermore, this thesis also summarizes some application principles of the theory (such as readers‟ special needs and culture transmission). It is hoped that this Chinese version of China Counting, which is translated according to the theories and principles, may shed some light on their usefulness for translators.
