ON THE INEVITABILITY OF GATSBYS TRAGEDY Name: Obama Major: English Linguistics and Literature (英语语言文学) Grade: 2008 (Class 11) College: College of Foreign Languages Date: 20th,2012 Tutor: Obama F .Scott Fitzgerald, the famous American novelist in the 1920s, is known as the spokesman and laureate of the Jazz Age America, whose works give us an accurate picture of the American twenties. Of his works, The Great Gatsby is thought to be the finest work, which is about the disillusionment of American Dream, and it is still endowed with deep connotations and full of metaphors and mottoes. This thesis analyzes the inevitability of Gatsbys tragedy from social, historical and authorial perspectives by examining the origins and essential nature of Gatsbys dreams, the naivety and innocence in his personality and the cruelty of the Jazz Age society epitomized by the ruthless and immoral Buchanans, for a combination of these elements defines Gatsbys failure and destruction in the end. Fitzgerald once summarized people’s characters at that time as “all Gods have died, all the wars have been over, and all the faiths have faded away.” American people living in Jazz Age looked down on the traditional faiths and betrayed moralities and customs that their ancestors used to abide by. At the end of the novel, Gatsby’s lonely funeral ceremony and people’s indifference completely reflected humanity coolness and ugliness in the society of U.S.A in 1920’s. From the very beginning, Gatsby was destined to be helpless and to fail in the end in this society. Key Words: Gatsby the American dream tragedy 中 文 摘 要 Contents I.
