Unit two Cultural shock Cultural Information Culture shock might be called an occupational disease of people who have been suddenly transplanted abroad. Like most illnesses, it has own symptoms and cure. Culture shock is caused by the anxiety that results from losing all our familiar signs and symbols or social contact. Those cues or signs include various ways in which we adapt ourselves to the situation of daily life. “Culture shock ” happens to people who have been suddenly placed in a stranger land. Newcomers may be anxious because they don’t speak the language, know the customs, or understand people’s behavior in daily life. Cultural Information The foreigners may be unsure as to when to shake hands or embrace, when to start conversations, or how to approach a stranger. Language problems don’t account for all the frustration that people feel. This is a period when the foreigner misses hometown back at his native country. The home environment suddenly appears of tremendous importance. Some of the symptoms of culture shock are excessive. Individuals differ greatly in the degree in which culture shock affects them. However, if one succeeds in getting some knowledge of the language and begin to get around by them, they are beginning to open the way into the new cultural environment. If you take a positive attitude, you will overcome the difficulties, and begin to accept the food, drinks, habits, and customs, at last you are sure to enjoy them.
