Introduction This whitepaper proposes a simple yet rigorous representation of the observation hierarchy that can be used for IHE DEC PCD-01 message modeling, conformance testing and documentation. It is intended to support the PCD-01 representation of PCD clinical care devices that use the IEEE 11073-10101 nomenclature and multi-level MDS.VMD.CHAN.METRIC ‘containment hierarchy’ and PHD personal health devices that use the IEEE 11073-20601 and 104XX device specializations that conform to a flatter hierarchy.. The Rosetta Containment Hierarchy (RCH) specifies the following information: The allowed hierarchies of OBX-3 observation identifiers, expressed as nodes of a ‘containment tree’. PCD and PHD devices are separately modeled, reflecting their somewhat different top-level data models. Although their definitions can be developed and maintained as separate files or databases, they can be combined at any time, since both sets of files conform to the same overarching framework. Individual devices are modeled, starting with the top-level MDC_DEV_*_MDS OBX for PCD clinical devicesand top-level MDC_DEV_SPEC_PROFILE_* OBX for a PHD personal health devices. The cardinality of each node in the containment tree is specified. The visibility of VMD or CHAN OBX ‘wrapper’ nodes is also specified.
