SYNOPSIS Going into 2010, China’s broadband subscriber population had passed the 100 million milestone. In 2004 China passed Japan to become the world’s second biggest broadband market, and then passed the US in 2008 to become the largest broadband market in the world. Despite this huge subscriber base, penetration remains comparatively low, meaning there is still much room for growth. China is the top DSL market on the globe and is making significant inroads with aggressive FttX deployments. This report looks at the nature of the market, the key players and broadband services, such as cable modem access, DSL, FttH and wireless access, accompanied by relevant statistics and analysis. Broadband forecasts to 2015 are also included as well as FttX forecasts to 2012. 2. BROADBAND MARKET 2.1 OVERVIEW China became the second largest broadband market in the world after the US in 2004, after it had passed Japan earlier in that year and South Korea in 2003. Falling equipment prices, low service tariffs and strong consumer demand for services such as online gaming and file sharing had been some of the reasons behind the impressive growth of broadband. In mid-2008 China eventually passed the US to become the world’s top broadband market. Broadband services began in 1994 but large-scale trials did not begin until 1998 when several cities united to offer trials for videoconferencing, Video-on-Demand (VoD), Internet Protocol-over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (IPoATM) and Local Area Network Emulation (LANE) over the fibre optic network.
