In theEnglish and Chinese ditransitive constructions that represent / in tended trans- fer of patient from the agent to the recip ient0, m an of the verbs do not have them ean ing of / transfer0 outside the construction. The originall represent various sub- events of the com plex event of / giving0 , e. g. , the antecedent, consequence, m anner, m ed ium or pu rpose of them ain event of / giving0. The / transfer0 sense posited for those verbs in the d itransitive construction is attributed to the/ contigu it 0 of the sub- events to the m ain event. Thus, it is the m echanism of meton m that has licensed them to be used in the ditransitive construction. This phenom enon ex ists in both English and Ch inese, but is m ore notable in English.
