In this study, PCRDGGE w as applied to analyze the mic obial communities in lake sediments. Sediment samples f om seven locations in th ee lakes we e collected and thei genomic DNA w as di ectly ext acted. The DNA yield of sediments of Lake Xuanwu and Lake Mochou was high ( 10gg) , while that of sediments in Lake Taihu was elatively low . Afte DNA pu ification, the 16S RNA genes ( V3 to V5 egion) we e amplified with two unive sal p ime s ( F341GC and R907) . These amplified DNA f agments w e e sepa ated by pa allel DGGE. The DGGE p ofiles indicate diffe ent bands patte ns fo diffe ent samples.
