Geotechnical Research Institute, Hohai University, Nanjing 210098, hina) Abstract Taking the mu cky clay on a river beach as an example, the insitu tests on porepressure dissipation of the mu cky clay at diff erent depths w ere performed by use of the static cone penetration ( CPTU) tests, and the consolidation coefficient w as obtained . It was compared w ith th at from the laboratory tests, indicating that the consolidation coefficient determ ined by the CPTU test s was 10 to 100 tim es higher that m easured in the laboratory. The m ethod for estimating the undrained shear strength by means of the CPTU test s w as introduced . Its results w ere compared w ith those from the vane shear tests . The applicability of those methods f or the mu cky soil w as evaluated, and the scope of their empirical coeff icient s w as determined .
