Through the China Golden Card project, we also provide support to the regional networks established in different parts of China. In 1996, Visa signed its first agreement with Beijing to support the operation of the Beijing regional card processing network. Additionally, Visa has established extensive relationships with the Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou Golden Card networks. Visa International also worked with Shanghai to connect Shanghai’s ATM network to Visa’s global ATM network. Today, over 2,000 ATMs in China are connected, enabling Visa cardholders visiting China to withdraw Renminbi from ATMs. And, Visa has been chosen by the Central Bank to help construct a national bankcard processing center—the very core of China’s consumer payment system.
