Writing Literature Review Identify 3-5 “organizing centers” that cover all references. A written review should have: 1. recognizable structure 2. Unity 3. Coherence (emphasize relatedness of studies) Commonly occurring “errors” when reviewing research Review is hurried because reviewer wants to get to on to the research itself; therefore, important previous studies are overlooked Reviewer relies too heavily on secondary sources. Reviewer concentrated on study findings, thus overlooking valuable information about methods of research, measures used. Reviewer overlooks sources other than journals, such as educational journals, newspapers, popular magazines, etc. Reviewer fails to define limits of topic. If area is too broad, then review will be slipshod, hazy; if area to narrow, may miss peripheral articles that might help to design a better study. Reviewer copies bibliographic data incorrectly or incompletely, so cannot relocate reference or use in references. Reviewer fails to use all relevant narrow descriptors when conducting a computer search. Keeping academic integrity The core of every college writing project is its content. For many writing assignments, the source of that content is expected to be your own. For many other assignments, you are expected to explain and support your ideas by drawing on outside sources, such as books, articles, films, and interviews. Whenever you work with outside sources, you are expected to avoid plagiarism and to credit your sources by using documentation. You can be an honest scholar in the writing process while borrowing ideas or words from other authors, if you Always attribute ideas and words that are not yours to their source.
