At first we collect the oracle bone scripts of animals from published resources in Section 1. In Section 2 we give a formal description to the structures of the animal scripts. In Section 3 we investigate the similarity and dissimilarity of the animal scripts. The investigation may be used for constructing cognitive networks for the oracle bone scripts. Keywords: Oracle Bone Scripts; animal names; cognition; distance; similarity 1 Oracle bone characters for animals Oracle bone scripts are the earliest Chinese characters found from the relics of late Shang and early Western Zhou dynasties, which are usually incised on the bone of animals or turtle shells in divination. Since 1899, more than 154,000 pieces of bones with scripts have been discovered, and on which people identified around 4500 different characters from all incised scripts[1]. Until now, only about 1/3 of the characters have been recognized.
