ABSTRACT
Sodium carbonate ( aHCO a CO ) causing stress for plant is named as carbonate stress in this

study. Some genes related to carbonate stress were screened from rice root cD A library, rice mitochondrial
ATP synthase 6kDa subunit gene (shortened form: RMtATP6 gene) is oneof thesegenes. Thegene encoding
amino acids sequence is homology to mitochondrialATP synthase 6kDa subunit (F part of F F AT P synthase)

purified from potato ( Sol an um t uberos um ) mitochondrial by Jansch et al ( 1996) , but the function of this
small protein is not clear and the gene has not been identified. In this report, the gene was cloned (accession
number: AB055076) , its expression was characterized under carbonate stress. The calculated molecular weight
of RMtATP6 gene encoding protein is 6578 kDa, the predicted intracellular localization sites is in mitochon
