Methods HSV- pecific DNA and anti-HSV IgM in t he cerebro pinal fluid ( CSF) were deter mined by polymera e chain reaction ( PCR) and enzyme-linked im- muno orbent a ay ( ELISA) in 27 childr en with poradic viral encephaliti . Results It wa found that HSV DNA wa po itive in CSF pecimen fr om 11 ca e , and HSV Ig M w a po itive in CSF pecimen of 4 ca e , including HSV type in 3 and type in 1; both HSV DNA and IgM w ere po itive in pecimen of 3 ca e . Specimen from 8 ca e w er e po itive for HV S DNA but negative for HSV IgM . Only one pec-i men w a po itive for HSV IgM but neg at ive for HSV DNA. T he po itivity for either HSV DNA or HSV IgM in the CSF pecimen wa con idered to be HSVE. HSV E wa diagno ed in 12 ( 44. 4% ) of t he 27 children. A ll patient with HSVE received intravenou acy clov ir therapy for 7 day a oon a the diagno i w a confirmed. Eight patient recorved completely , tw o had ignificant improv ementm, one wa di charged from the ho pital w ith no impr ovement and one died.
