Chapter Ⅱ The Inaugural Address John F. Kennedy About The Author John F. Kennedy (1917~1963) was the 35th president of the United States. He was elected to the House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1946, and he became a senator in 1952. In 1960, he was elected to the presidency, the first Roman Catholic and the youngest man ever to be elected to that office. An assassin’s bullet cut short Kennedy’s term as president. On November 22nd, 1963, he was shot to death while riding the motorcade in Dallas, Texas. About the Text John F. Kennedy was inaugurated as the president of the United States on January 20, 1961, when he delievered his famous inaugural address in front of the Capitol ( 国会大厦 ), in Washington D. C.. One of the most eloquent of American Presidents, Kennedy devoted his entire address to international affairs. This address clearly reflected the character of the young President. Contrast as a rhetorical device figures throughout the address ( 通篇运用对比修辞手法), it has been acclaimed in the western countries as a political expression.
