Effect of Acid and Alkali on Phosphorus Release from Sewage Sludge in the
Microwave Treatment Process

Abstract: I pacts of acid and alkali addition on phosphorus releasefro sewage sludgewere investigated in a icrowavereactor at at ospheric
pressure. Results showed that in the icrowave irradiation process, though NaOH pretreat ent increased the release efficiency of phosphorus
fro 2818% to 5911%, large a ounts of carbon and nitrogen were correspondingly released into the supernatant. Co pared to the alkali
pretreat ent, pretreat ent of H SO not only resulted in the higher release efficiency of phosphorus by 3 ti es (up to 8415%), but also

sharply reduced the a ount of carbon and nitrogen released into the supernatant. These results suggest that H SO pretreat ent of sewage

sludge can selectively release carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, which is ore suitable for phosphorus recovery fro sewage sludge.
Meanwhile, thepH range of 211-212 was opti al for phosphorus releasefro sewage sludge in the icrowavetreat ent process.
