China Corresponding author: LI UMin, Email: liumin@scu. edu. cn Abstract Objective T o explore the hara t eristi s of forensi pathology in traumati brain injury and the rela t ionships between se ondary brainstem damage, ompli ations and t he auses of death. Methods 127 ases w ere re view ed from gender, age, manner of injury , survival t ime and t he dire t auses of death from January 1998 to De em ber 2008. Results Of the 127 ases, the key dire t ause of death was se ondary brainstem damage, followed by se vere primarily brain injury and ompli ations. For those w ho died wit hin 12 hours after injury, the dire t ause w as se vere primarily brain injury; for those w ho survived betw een 12 hours to one week, se ondary brainst em damage was in the majority of the auses and for those who survive more than one w eek t ime, ompli ation w as an im portant ause. Conclusion In the ases of t raumati brain injury, w e should take omprehensive and systemati ex aminat ion of foren si pathology, and refer t o lini al dat a at the same time to determine the dire t ause of death.
