In the past, making injection molds went beyond the scope of what the average Tech Ed class could do, due to a lack of machining equipment and because molds must be made of metal in order to withstand the temperatures that occur during injection molding. Although vendors sell injection molds used in tabletop molders found in many Tech Ed facilities, these molds do not allow students to personalize them. Now that CAD/CAM has become an important tool in design, many schools teach it as part of their Tech Ed programs. Yet schools have faced the problem of developing real-world applications for these tools, applications that allow students to apply their newfound skill. We have developed a project centered on the concept of using CAD/CAM skills to make an injection mold to produce a product that students like, in a way that mirrors the process in industry. Instead of making the entire mold, students make a personalized insert to place in a mold. We use a 1/4 slice of 1-1/2^-dia aluminum rod to make the insert for a personalized key fob.
