SIMPLE TIPS TO GO GREEN AND SAVE ENERGY IN YOUR FACILITY ENERGY The single, largest opportunity for energy conservation and reduction of costs for a facility is in reducing your lighting consumption Install occupancy sensors, if possible, in rooms not fully occupied, such as Conference Rooms, Break rooms, Classrooms, and Restrooms. If budget allows, install in offices. If cost is a factor, launch an Awareness Campaign: Post signs in Restrooms, Conference Rooms – “Last one out, turn the lights off” Turn off task lights when leaving your office or work station ENERGY Turn off PCs at night before you leave Unplug electrical equipment or appliances when not in use – Toasters, coffee makers, radios – Even if not turned on, they are consuming energy Avoid using the automatic push-button door openers at building entrances, if not needed If you have a choice, use a revolving door – helps conserve thermal comfort When possible, use the stairs instead of the elevator For windows with blinds, turn the blinds convex side toward the glass to reduce the amount of heat gain into the space Close blinds only enough to control glare in spaces that have daylight harvesting ENERGY Cut monthly bills by 30% by replacing equipment and energy appliances with Energy Star products Keep thermostat at 70 degrees or lower in cold weather and 76 degrees or higher in warm weather Get out of the car one day a week – Resolve to spare the air. Check your company’s telework policy, carpool, use public transportation or bicycle. Combine trips when running errands OTHER GREEN IDEAS Make your facility a toxic free environment. Paints, solvents and other chemicals should be disposed of properly and safely, not flushed down the toilet or poured down the drain. Baking soda and vinegar substitutes as a great all-purpose cleaner. Other non-toxic cleaners are found in many stores. Cut down on pesticides and fertilizers in your garden and you’ll limit what gets washed into rivers, bays and oceans
