Abstract: Overvoltage is one of the main causes of dam age in the isolation of inverter-fed traction
motors. To solve th is problem, the mechan ism and influencing factors w ere analyzed w ith the
transm ission line theory and smi ulation on the equ ivalent circu it. The analyses show that overvoltage is
a function of the rise tmi e of the converter output pu lse and the lengths of the traction motor cables,
and that its m agn itude can be as large as 1. 9 tmi es of the pu lse voltage. The magnitude can be
decreased to 1. 1 tmi es of the pulse voltage w ith a shuntR-C reactor.
