* AIDS is the abbreviated name of this disease, and its entire (complete) name is acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. A large diversity is observe in the HIV epidemiological patterns in Asia: The estimated rate of infection is the highest, between 2 and 3% of the adult population , in three countries: Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar. Two countries have intermediate level of infection, between 0.1% and 1% and these are India and Vietnam. All other countries still have rates of infection below 0.1%, including China. Because of the large population of China and India, although the rate of infection is low, the number of people infected is high – 4 million in India and 600 000 in China. Because of the size of these 2 populations, the potential for serious HIV epidemic in Aisia, in terms of numbers infected, exists.
