Haidenbauerb 2 g aJoint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna, Moscow region, Russia, 141980 u A b Institut f¨ur Kernphysik, Forschungszentrum J¨ulich, D-52425 J¨ulich, Germany 2 3 2 It is shown that the shoulder observed in the cross section of p He backward elastic 1 scattering at proton beam energies of 0.4 – 0.7 GeV can be explained by the mecha- v nism of virtual π-meson production with a dominant contribution from the subprocesses 3 ∗ 3 0 3 + ∗ 6 pd → He π and p (pp ) → He π , where d denotes the singlet deuteron and the pp pair is 0 in the 1S0 state. At high energies, 1 −3 GeV, the mechanism of np-pair transfer dominates 8 1 3 and probes high-momentum NN ( S ) correlations in He. 0 0 3 0 / 3 h Over the past few years p He backward elastic scattering has been investiged [ 1, 2] t l- on the basis of the DWBA using a 3N bound-state wave function obtained from solving c the Faddeev equations for the Reid RSC NN potential.
