Performance is compared to that of single–antenna transmission with one and two receive antennas, respectively. Also, an approximation for the bit error rate (BER) of maximum–likelihood (ML) de- tection is determined for MIMO transmission over frequency–selective channels. Joint channel estimation is included in our considerations and the influence of dif- ferent training sequences on the detection performance is shown. One crucial point is the selection of suitable training sequence pairs. Here, optimum training se- quences are compared to different sets of training sequences included in the current GSM/ EDGE standard. Simulation results are given taking into account spacial correlation of the 2 × 2 MIMO channel and good performance is obtained even for high subchannel correlations. 1 Introduction The evolution towards third–generation (3G) mobile communication systems is driven b
