Abstract
We compare the quantitative microstructural prop erties of Berea Sandstone with
sto chastic reconstructions of the same sandstone The comparison is based on lo
cal p orosity theory The reconstructions employ Fourier space ltering of Gaussian
random elds and match the average p orosity and twop oint correlation function of
the exp erimental mo del Connectivity prop erties of the sto chastic mo dels dier sig
nicantly from the exp erimental mo del Reconstruction mo dels with dierent levels
of coarse graining also show dierent average lo cal connectivity
Recently a numb er of sto chastic mo dels have b een prop osed for reconstruc
tion of the microstructure of p orous mediasee and references therein To
assess the quality of the reconstruction it is neccessary to have quantitative
metho ds of comparison for such microstructures General geometric character
ization metho ds normally include p orosities sp ecic surface areas and correla
tion functions Here we follow a more general quantitative characterization
for sto chastic microstructures which is based on lo cal p orosity theory LPT
Our analysis allows to distinguish quantitatively b etween three dierent
microstructures all of which have identical p orosities and correlation functions
The three microstructures are an exp erimental sample of Berea Sandstone ob
tained by computerized microtomography and two sto chastic mo dels of the
same sandstone obtained through Gauss
