BACIVAROV ElectronicTechnology Reliability Division, Univer sity “Politehnica” of Bucharest, Romania E-mail:bacivaro@danube.euroqual.pub.ro Abstract In the first part of this paper some aspects concer ning the reliability of optical communication syste ms were analyzed. The analysis which has been made shown th at due to the quantum noise and the detection processes at optical frequencies, it is necessary t o introducenew reliability indices with a higher degree of complexity, which take into account the quantum asp ects of optical communication. The forms of these reliability indices in the case of different optica communicationl systems were established. Based on -the program RELCOM- elaborated by the author, several curves which show the relation between the detectio n threshold and the different parameters of the trans mission channel were plotted.They made possible the reliability analysis and optimization of optical co mmunication systems from the reliability point of v iew. 1.
