Study of the ground and excited states of Λ and Σ hyperon production at COSY D. Grzonka 4 0 Institut f¨ur Kernphysik, Forschungszentrum J¨ulich, Germany 0 2 v o Abstract: COSY with a maximum beam momentum of ∼ 3.65 GeV/c N allows the production of ground state (Λ and Σ) and excited hyperons 7 (Λ(1405), Σ(1385) and Λ(1520) ) in elementary NN interactions. The ex- 1 isting data base in this ﬁeld is rather poor. A systematic study of the hyperon production at COSY will result in an improvement of our under- 1 standing concerning topics like hyperon–nucleon interaction, kaon–nucleon v 2 interaction, nucleon resonances, strangeness production mechanism and 3 structure of the Λ(1405). Precise data on Λ and Σ production have been 0 produced at the COSY-11 and TOF installation. With the WASA de- 1 tector at COSY these studies can be continued and extended to channels 1 including photons in the ﬁnal state. 4 0 / x e l- 1 Introduction c u n The cooler synchrotron COSY with a maximum beam momentum of ∼ 3.65 : GeV/c allows the production of Λ and Σ hyperons in elementary NN- v i interactions via the associated strangeness production NN → NY K . Ground X − 0 + state (Λ, Σ , Σ , Σ ) as well as the excited hyperon states Λ(1405), Σ(1385) r a and Λ(1520) are accessible.
