The Northern Ireland Troubles And Solutions The Background The Protestants, being the majority, controlled the local democratically-elected parliament, and used that power to support their own economic and social dominance in the province. 40% of the population were Catholic Irish, who found it harder to get jobs, or to benefit from social programmers such as public housing. The armed conflict “troubles” developed. ★ Civil Rights Movement (北爱民权运动) The Roman Catholics revolt in Northern Ireland was triggered by the Civil Rights Movement in the US. Although the American Civil Rights Movement concentrated on the systematic discrimination against black people, it provided a model for those in Northern Ireland who felt they had been treated in much the same way as American blacks. The result in Northern Ireland was a vigorous, but originally pacifist, campaign to regain civil rights for those roman Catholics, conducted by means of marches, speeches, and sit-ins. ★ IRA’s violence in the 1970s (IRA: Irish Republic Army爱尔兰共和军,unofficially paramilitary force) ☆ 起因: Groups of Protestants began to organized counter-demonstrations, and riots broke out. The police were overwhelmed by the fighting, and the Northern Irish Prime Minister asked London for soldiers to help restore orders. In 1969, the first British soldiers were seen on Northern Ireland( and they had been there until 2007). The British soldiers first came to protect the Catholics. However, the longer they stayed, the more they were seen as the symbol of British rule in Northern Ireland. In 1971 the Northern Irish government took the desperate step of imprisoning terrorist suspects(拘留恐怖主义嫌疑犯) from both sides without trial, a policy known as “internment”, which targeted primarily Catholic men in the North.
