Methods
Photocatalytic reaction. Reactions were carried out in a Pyrex top-irradiation reaction
+
vessel connected to a glass closed gas circulation system. Photoreduction of H to H2
and photooxidation of H O to O were performed separately in aqueous solutions

containing methanol or silver nitrate as sacrificial reagents, respectively. H2 production
was performed by dispersing 0.1 g of g-C N catalyst powder in an aqueous solution

containing sacrificial electron donors such as triethanolamine and methanol (100 mL, 10
vol.%). In the case of deposition of Pt, an appropriate amount of H PtCl was dissolved

in the reactant solution24. For water photooxidation, 0.1 g of the catalyst and 0.2 g of
La O powder were dispersed in the aqueous silver nitrate solution (0.01 M, 100 mL).

La O , a basic metal oxide, buffers the pH of the reactant solution to pH 8–9 during the

reaction. The reactant solution was evacuated several times to remove air completely
prior to irradiation under a 300 W xenon lamp and a water filter. The wavelength of the
incident light was controlled by using an appropriate cut-
