Phrasal Verbs and Idioms
to venture into/on something”
To do something that may be risky e.g: She ventured into the unknown.

“to visit with somebody ” (American English)
To spend time with someone in a casual manner e.g: I visited with my friend on the weekend.
Idioms: 1) “to be on a guilt trip”
To make someone feel guilty/feel guilty for oneself e.g: Every time I stay out late, my mom lays this big guilt
trip on me about how I make her worry.
Bonus Idiom: “to be on an ego trip”
To be big-headed, over important, feel superior e.g: Hes been on an ego trip ever since he was promoted to
director.

Exceptions
1) Except/except for are used to show that someone or something is not included e.g:
Everyone appeared to be invited to the party except (for) Bob and Rob.
2) to - infinitives and that – sentences take except but not except for e.g:

Robs jacket looks like its made of leather, except that its made of PVC (not except for).
3) We usually use except before prepositions, bare infinitives and that sentences where the word that can
be ommitted. BUT, colloquially, except for is on occasion used although it is grammatically incorrect e.g:
Robs jacket looks just like its made of leather, except (that) its made of plastic.
Try these exercises. Use except or except for. Say when both are possible.
