Ulianova, 19 Moscow 117306 Russia (Received 4 March 1997, revised manuscript accepted 16 August 1997) The chemical composition of 17 gold foil artefacts from a Late Sarmatian burial were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP- OES). The Au, Ag and Cu contents were determined by ICP-OES and the As, Bi, Co, Fe, Ni, Pb, Pt, Sb, Sn and Zn contents were measured by ICP-MS. The gold ranged in fineness from 921 fine to 998 fine. Copper was clearly an addition in four of the samples, but it is uncertain if the copper in the other 13 samples was intentionally added or part of the original gold alloy. Hierarchical cluster analysis of the trace element compositions suggests that the gold used in these artefacts came from three dierent ‘‘sources’’ or workshops.
