The great difference between Chinese and western culture directly results in the great difference between Chinese and English verbal taboos. Therefore, it is of great significance to study them both in linguistics and culture. Due to the fact that intercultural communication plays an increasingly important role in modern communication with the dramatic development of the society, an investigation into Chinese and English verbal taboos can not only avoid mistakes when communicating with others, but also improve the appreciation level. In addition, people can know the traditions of western countries through the study of verbal taboos. This thesis aims to explore the differences and similarities of verbal taboos between Chinese and English. The differences exist in the name, privacy, number, color and so on，while the similarities exist in the death, religion, and human physiology and behavior. Above all, the purpose to study the difference between Chinese and English verbal taboos is to communicate appropriately. Besides, the study may help the English learners to get a better understanding of different cultures in Chinese and English.
