China Center for Economic Research, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China） Abstract: The purpose of the study is to analyze the shortcomings of present compensation system for land expropriation and put forward a new bargaining model for compensation from economic perspective. Methods employed include theoretical analysis and economic modeling. The results show that present compensation system in which government determines the prices not only loses efficiency significantly, but also harms the interests of land-lost farmers, while participatory bargaining model can solve the two problems better. It is concluded that present compensation system should be reformed and the participative bargaining model should be put i
