China P2 hybrid system Dr. Niu Mingkui Director eMobility Schaeffler Trading (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. 1. Abstract: This article summarizes the development of the Schaeffler P2 China hybrid module. Starting with a consideration of the market requirements and the market challenges in China it is concluded that a P2 hybrid system fits very well to the Chinese market. These requirements were translated into a P2 hybrid specification for the Chinese market. Simulations and measurements show that the specification was fulfilled and the requirements of market are completely met. Finally the product design is explained in detail with its outstanding modular concept. The same-part strategy enables application engineering instead of a completely new development process for each customer. The Schaeffler P2 hybrid module contains a high power density permanent magnet synchronous e-motor and an electrical central actuation system which tightly manages the torque split between combustion engine and e-motor during ICE start. Highest efforts were taken to ensure that the enlarged powertrain fits into existing chassis packages and can be combined with a manual transmission or any kind of automatic transmission like AMT, CVT, DCT or a conventional stepped automatic transmission. 2. Market requirements and challenges in China The Chinese civilian vehicle’s ownership has been growing dramatically in the last five years and reached 120 million units at the end of 2012.
