Analysis and Optimisation of a Magnetic Power-Split Transmission for a Hybrid Electric Vehicle Stuart Chubbock Simulation Engineer Romax Technology Limited, United Kingdom Barry James Chief Technical Officer – Drivetrain Romax Technology Limited, United Kingdom Abstract The development of hybrid electric vehicles presents a number of challenges in terms of optimising the drivetrain configuration, the component specifications and the supervisory control strategy. Romax has developed advanced simulation tools to analyse hybrid and electric vehicle powertrains at the concept development stage, which enables the rapid analysis of a large number of designs and allows subsequent development effort to be focused on those designs that show the greatest promise. Romax is a partner in the MAGSPLIT (Magnetic Power-Split Technology for Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicles) collaborative research and development project, which is co-funded by the UK Government-backed Technology Strategy Board. The consortium is being led by Magnomatics with further input from Ford Motor Company and Arnold Magnetic Technologies. The aims of the project are to optimise Magnomatics’ Magsplit device for use in a power-split hybrid vehicle powertrain, and to demonstrate the benefits of this technology through dynamometer testing of a prototype unit. The Magsplit is an integrated electro- mechanical power-split device incorporating a high efficiency, lubricant-free magnetic gear that fulfils the role of the planetary transmission and separate electric machine in a power- split hybrid transmission.
