Page 1 Survey of Approaches to Solving the ACOPF Optimal Power Flow Paper 4 Anya Castillo and Richard P O’Neill anya.castillo@; richard.oneill@ March 2013 Abstract: We present a background on approaches historically applied to solve the ACOPF, many which are used in our following companion study on testing solution techniques Castillo, 2013. In this paper we present an introduction on the associated theory in nonlinear optimization, and then discuss the solvers and published algorithms that have been applied to the ACOPF, dating initially from Carpentier in 1962 to current day approaches. We provide insight into the major contributions in solution methods applied to the ACOPF to date.
