16.1.1 Safety Philosophy of Electronic Equipment
Safety is a term commonly applied to a wide range of issues. Safety, as related to equipment, refers to all
the features built into a piece of equipment to prevent an accident. The accident can be a result of one
or more hazards that can appear during the installation or use in normal or abnormal conditions of
equipment operation. The basic philosophy of safety is that the safety features must be incorporated into
the equipment from the design stage, continuing with the manufacturing, shipping, installation, and
operation of the equipment.
All potential hazards should be identified within the design stage, which is the stage at which all the
problems can be corrected and/or eliminated with no impact on the performance of the equipment and
with a minimal financial efforts.
From the point of view of safety, the design stage has four major steps:
