Abstract This paper presents the design of two novels internal Planar Inverted-F Antenna (PIFA) suitable for handset terminals. These structures combine shorted parasitic patches, capacitive loads and slots to achieve multiband operation. The first resulting compact antenna operates in the GSM, DCS, PCS and UMTS bands within 2.5:1 voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR). In addition to these frequency bands, the second antenna covers HIPERLAN/2 and IEEE 802.11a standards. Good agreement is found between simulated and measured results. I Introduction The rapid increase of communication standards leads to a great demand in developing multiband antennas for handset devices. Internal Planar Inverted-F Antennas (PIFAs) are very suitable in such applications since they are compact, low profile and easy to manufacture. However, several techniques applied simultaneously are necessary to reduce the size of these antennas while maintaining good multiband/wideband performances. Starting with a main quarter-wavelength element, these techniques are : addition of parasitic shorted patches, capacitive loads and slots on the resonators.
