Simulation of a Dipole Antenna Using HFSS Prepared by Mohammad-Reza Tofighi, PhD Pennsylvania State University, Harrisburg April 2011 1. Setting up the Structure From Taskbar or desktop, find HFSS icon and open the program by clicking on it. There may be a new project under Project Manager. Otherwise select FileNew. Then click on project icon in project menu and change the name to “Dipole”. Click on “Insert HFSS Design” icon, above the project manager. A new design window will be open. Click on “HFSSDesign1” and rename it to “DipoleDesign_1”. From the existing toolbars ( ) or Draw menu select Draw Cylinder. Click on any point on the design, move the mouse and click again, and move the mouse and click again. Here you are going to have an arbitrary sized cylinder. To the left of the design window, you will see “Solids”, with the new solid object Cylider1 listed. Click on CreateCylinder and change the dimensions according to the following figures. First enter the feed gap size (FeedGap) as 2mm. (Note the cylinder will be 1 mm above xy plane.). Second, enter the radius of wire, a (=2.5 mm). Third, enter the height of the cylinder as L/2-FeedGap/2 (L = /2=15 cm, where  = 30 cm for a half a wavelength dipole at f = 1GHz. Click on OK in the figure below. You have now created a cylinder with radius 2.5 mm, length of 74 mm, and with the base center at (0,0,1mm) You should click at “Fit all the contents in the view” in the toolbar to be able to see the whole top half of the dipole. Also, click at “Cylinder1” under “Solids”, and rename it to TopHalf. Repeat the above step to create the BottomHalf as shown in the below figure. The full dipole after clicking at “Fit all the contents in the view” should look like this, with 2 mm gap is shown in the middle. T
