ACCUMULATIVE ROLL-BONDING (ARB) PROCESS

Introduction
It has been clarified recently that ultra-fine grains less than 1 m in diameter can be obtained by intense
plastic straining. Several intense straining processes such as torsion straining [1–6], equal-channel
angular pressing (ECAP) [4–8], and mechanical milling of powder metals [9,10] have been proposed
for grain refinement. However, the previously proposed processes are not appropriate for practical
application to produce large bulk materials. We have, on the other hand, developed a novel intense
straining process for bulk materials using rolling deformation, named accumulative roll-bonding
(ARB), very recently [11,12]. Fig. 1 illustrates
