Career breaks have long been regarded as a way to recharge batteries and perhaps mark a change from one career to another. But increasing numbers of employers now regard time spent by their staff working or traveling abroad as valuable experience that can bring benefits back home.
Accountant Price Waterhouse Coopers allows its employees to take career breaks lasting from 14 weeks to four years. Liz Brown, UK partner responsible for people and knowledge, says this not only enables employees to learn new skills that may be valuable to clients, but also enables PWC to compete for and retain the best recruits:” Our people are the key to our success and we must treat them that way. We recognize that much of what they do outside the workplace is key to how they work with clients.”
Cary Cooper, professor of organizational psychology and health at Umist in Manchester, says the benefits depend on what you do during your break, your age and where you are in your career. For twenty something who have gone into a career straight after college, he recommends working in other countries. Thirty and forty something can benefit from working or traveling, provided they treat the experience as a “quality-life audit”.
Cooper says the experience of traveling or living in a foreign country can draw a family closer. A break can be a quick fix, enabling you to face the next 20 years of employment. For someone who feels the are not going to proceed further up the work hierarchy, it can provide an opportunity to change direction or alter your work/life balance.
Taking career breaks abroad by the employees is considered career break by more and more companies.
The longest career break that PWC people are allowed to take is recharge battery.

For those in their 30’s or 40’s, career breaks give them a chance of retain the best recruit.
