Carmen By Georges Bizet Act I ACTE PREMIER (ACT ONE) Prelude English： A square in Seville. On the right, the door of a tobacco factory. At the back of the stage there is a bridge which can be crossed, spanning the whole width of the stage. Access to the bridge from the stage is by a curved staircase, which curves to the right above the tobacco factory door. There is an entrance from under the bridge. On the left, in the foreground, is a guardhouse. In front of the guardhouse there is a little covered balcony, with two or three steps up to it. In a rack, near the guardhouse, are the dragoons lances with their red and yellow pennants. When the curtain rises we see about fifteen soldiers (dragoons of the Alcala regiment) grouped in front of the guardhouse. Some sit smoking, others lean on the balustrade. Passers-by in the square -- people in a hurry, people on business, come and go, meet, greet, or jostle each other, etc. French： Une place, à Séville. -- A droite, la porte de la manufacture de tabac. -- Au fond, face au public, pont praticable traversant la SCèNE dans toute son étendue. -- De la SCèNE on arrive à ce pont par un escalier tournant qui fait sa révolution à droite au-dessus de la porte de la manufacture de tabac. -- Le dessous du pont est praticable. -- A gauche, au premier plan, le corps de garde. -- Devant le corps de garde, une petite galerie couverte, exhaussée de deux ou trois marches; près du corps de garde, dans un ratelier, les lances des dragons avec leurs banderolles jaunes et rouges. Au lever du rideau, une quinzaine de soldats (Dragons du régiment dAlmanza), sont groupés davant le corps de garde. Les uns assis et fumant, les autres accoudés sur la balustrade de la galerie. Mouvement de passants sur la place.
