Here, a user has launched a web browser on a Windows machine and entered the URL of a Sun Secure Global Desktop server. The user is presented with a login dialog to provide access credentials. Once authenticated, the users “webtop” is displayed. The webtop is where all of the applications and desktop environments that have been published to the user are displayed. To use an application, the user simply clicks a link on the webtop to launch the application on the remote server and it is immediately displayed. In addition to launching applications, the webtop also provides: - User application object grouping, allowing users to setup custom group of objects - User session control (suspend/resume/end sessions)? - User printing control One of the common objections to running applications remotely is that the user experience will be significantly different from using local applications. Sun Secure Global Desktop Software is designed with this concern in mind, providing many features that help applications integrate smoothly into the client environment. Providing a local application-like user experience reduces complexity for the end users by allowing them to use published applications just as if they were running on their local machine – windows seamlessly integrate with the client environment, printers and smart card readers attached to the client devices work as users expect. If the administrator chooses, users can even map their local hard drives to the remote Application Tier servers, providing easy access to local documents. This is an example of a separate application utilizing SGDS to provide secure application access. In this case, a portlet has been written that integrates with the Sun Java System Portal Server. Authentication information is sent to the SGDS server when the user logins to the portal and a customized list of available applications is displayed as channel in the portal.
